At 64, I married a 31-year-old man. Six months later, I discovered what he was hiding in my drink…

A story of suspense, secrets and betrayal.

The doctor remained silent for a few seconds, staring at the test results.

Then he slowly rose from his chair, locked the study door, and lowered his voice.

“Mrs. Margaret, you must listen to me carefully. Don’t go home alone, and above all, don’t drink anything your husband makes for you anymore.”

I felt the blood freeze in my veins.

“So it’s true? Daniel’s trying to poison me?”

The doctor didn’t answer immediately. He picked up the test sheet and placed it in front of me.

“I can’t say for certain what his intentions are. But in the sample he brought us, we detected a substance that shouldn’t be present in a beverage intended for consumption. His symptoms could be consistent with repeated exposure. We need to investigate further immediately.”

I was out of breath.

For six months I thought I had finally found someone who loved me for who I was.

At sixty-four, after a life spent working, raising my son, and going through a painful divorce, I thought happiness could come even when I stopped looking for it.

Daniel was thirty-one years old.

He was charming, thoughtful, and knew exactly what to say to make me feel special. He brought me flowers for no particular reason, made me breakfast, and called me “the most beautiful woman in the world.”

When others looked at us in surprise at the age difference, he would shake my hand and say:

“Love doesn’t look at numbers, Margaret. It looks at the heart.”

I believed him.

Now, sitting in that doctor’s office, I wondered if every sweet word had been just an act.

“What should I do?” I asked.

The doctor looked at me seriously.

“First of all, you need to get yourself to safety. I recommend an urgent medical evaluation to determine whether the substance has already compromised your health. Then we need to document everything that happened.”

He handed me a copy of the results.

My hands were shaking so badly that I almost dropped the papers.

“And my husband?”

“Don’t go through this alone. If you suspect someone is giving you a dangerous substance, your safety comes before any explanation.”

I nodded, but inside my mind was already going back to that night.

The night I heard Daniel talking on the phone.

Time is running out. If we continue like this, we could lose her.

At the time I thought he was referring to me.

Now I feared that those words hid something even more terrible.

## The secret hidden in the black bottle

I didn’t go straight home.

I stopped in a safe place and called my sister, Helen, the only person I had ever told everything to.

When he heard my voice, he immediately knew something was wrong.

“Margaret, what happened?”

I tried to explain, but I burst into tears before I could even finish the first sentence.

Helen didn’t ask me unnecessary questions.

He reached me and accompanied me to receive medical assistance.

That evening, as I sat next to her, I thought back to every moment of the last few months.

Daniel had started making me a hot drink every night shortly after the wedding.

It said it contained natural ingredients to help me sleep better and regain energy.

At first it seemed like a sweet gesture to me.

Then I started to feel more and more tired.

I would wake up with a heavy head, forget small details, and sometimes sleep so soundly that I didn’t hear the phone ring.

Daniel claimed it was normal.

“Honey, you work too much. You need to rest.”

When I asked him what he put in the drink, he smiled.

“It’s a surprise.”

But that smile no longer reassured me.

I also remembered the black bottle he had quickly slipped into his pocket when I turned around.

Why hide it?

Why did you insist so much that I finish every drop?

And most of all, why wait in front of me until I had drunk it all?

They were no longer small gestures of affection.

These were questions I was afraid to know the answers to.

## The phone call that changed everything

The next morning, I received a call from an unknown number.

I answered cautiously.

“Ready?”

A male voice spoke from the other end.

“Mrs. Margaret? My name is Robert. I need to talk to you about Daniel.”

I stiffened.

“Who are you?”

“I’m someone who knows your husband. I know what’s going on at your house.”

I got up from my chair.

“What’s going on?”

The man hesitated.

“I can’t explain everything to you over the phone. But you should know one thing: Daniel hasn’t told you the truth about why he married her.”

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What does it mean?”
