Family-Sized First Date Ends in Legal Battle

A Chinese woman’s creative approach to testing her blind date’s generosity ended in an expensive lesson recently. Miss Zhang of Zhejiang province surprised Mr. Lui by bringing 23 family members to their first dinner together, hoping to assess his willingness to provide. The plan backfired spectacularly when the bill reached 20,000 yuan ($3,100) and her date refused to pay.

What began as a romantic evening turned into a financial standoff at the restaurant. Mr. Lui, confronted with the unexpected crowd and mounting costs, chose to leave rather than foot the bill. The conflict escalated to court, where a judge ruled Zhang was primarily responsible for the expenses, requiring Mr. Lui to contribute only a small portion.

This extreme dating tactic has become a cautionary tale across Chinese social media. Relationship coaches emphasize that while financial compatibility matters, genuine connection develops through mutual respect and honest communication – not elaborate financial tests that put potential partners in uncomfortable positions.
