How many holes does this t-shirt have? Only one in seven people gets the answer right.

At first glance, the question seems almost too easy. A t-shirt, holes… nothing could be more ordinary. And yet, this puzzle has managed to stump thousands of people on social media. The kind of challenge that gives you confidence for three seconds, before sowing a seed of doubt. So take a deep breath, forget the easy answers, and look closely… because here, it’s all about observation.
The enigma that divides everyone

The question is simple: how many holes are there in this t-shirt?
The choices offered are clear: 2, 4, 6 or 8.

Many people instinctively answer without thinking too much. Others take a few seconds, recount mentally, hesitate… and change their minds. The result: only one person in seven gets the answer right the first time. It just goes to show that even everyday objects can play tricks on us.

Why does our brain make so many mistakes?

Our brain loves shortcuts. When faced with a t-shirt, it immediately thinks of the obvious openings: the head, the arms, the bottom. But it tends to ignore a fundamental detail… or rather two: the front and the back.

In this type of puzzle, we focus on what we see first. We forget that the holes go right through the fabric. And that’s precisely where the trap is sprung.

Let’s take the time to count together
Let’s start calmly, without rushing.

A hole for the head
Two holes for the arms
A hole at the bottom for the body
So far, everyone agrees. We therefore arrive at four holes. It is often at this point that many stop… or add the two holes visible on the front of the t-shirt (in the challenge illustration), which brings them to six.

But this reasoning remains incomplete.

The detail that almost everyone forgets
A hole, by definition, passes through a material. If you can see through it, it means there is an entrance and an exit. In other words, a hole visible at the front also exists at the back.

The two holes visible on the front of the t-shirt are therefore also present on the back. We don’t always notice them, because our gaze naturally focuses on what is directly in front of us.

This is where the puzzle becomes really interesting… and the answer takes a turn.

The final (and correct) answer

Let’s go over the final calculation again:

1 hole for the head
2 holes for the arms
1 hole at the bottom
2 visible holes on the front
2 holes corresponding to the back
Total: 8 holes

Yes, 8. An answer that seems exaggerated at first glance, but which becomes obvious once the explanation is laid out in black and white.

Why does this puzzle work so well?
This challenge is remarkably effective because it relies neither on mathematics nor on any particular knowledge. It simply highlights how we perceive objects. We see what we think we should see, not always what is actually there.

This is also why this kind of viral visual challenge spreads so easily: it provokes that little moment of surprise, followed by a “But yes, of course!” which immediately makes you want to share it.

An excellent exercise for the mind
Visual puzzles like this one are like mini-gymnastics for the brain. They force us to slow down, to observe differently, and to question our assumptions. And let’s be honest: there’s a certain pleasure in discovering that we’ve been tricked… before we can trick others in turn.

And you, did you find it?
If you answered 8 on your first try, congratulations: you’re part of the ultra-attentive minority. If not, don’t worry, you’re in excellent company.

The next time you put on a t-shirt, chances are you’ll think about this surprising visual puzzle … and you’ll never look at your clothes the same way again.
